How to Get Rid of Pigeons

Pests have been known to make life difficult and harm goods and human health. They are also said to be the carrier of several contagious diseases and have detrimental effects on agriculture and livestock. Thus, any pesky organism, which causes a nuisance and threatens the day to day activities of the common man, can be categorized under pests. Even though, pigeons or doves are admired by some, still they are a nuisance.

Typically, pigeons eat seeds, fruit and plants; basically human food. Thus, arises the ageless battle for the survival of the fittest. Pigeons also carry diseases, reproduce rapidly and poop everywhere thus making their place of nesting dirty. The uric acid contained in their droppings defaces and damages buildings and automobiles. This is not all. The incessant cooing and the flying are other irritating habits of the pigeon.

In order to deal with the growing menace called pigeons, several methods have been discovered. In order to keep all sorts of winged things out especially pigeons, the open spaces, vents and the attic can be covered with industrial or plastic bird netting, hardware cloth, silicone caulk, plastic screens, heavy door curtains, etc. Also, bird spikes, bird slopes and bird wires are available to keep out these birds. The spikes can be installed in the rafters of barns and sheds in order to prevent pigeons from roosting. The slopes provide an uncomfortable angle of forty-five to sixty degree to a plane surface thus discouraging the pigeons from building their nests. Weatherproof string tied in places where they like to roost is another method of control.

In order to control the pigeon population which can increase at a rapid rate because pigeons can lay eggs for up to six times a year, contraceptives can be used. One such contraceptive is ovocontrol which renders the eggs infertile. Also, dummy eggs have been used to replace the real eggs in order to limit the population. Certain cities have even banned the feeding of pigeons in order to reduce the amount of available food and in turn, the pigeon population.

Other methods can include live traps. Bait like corn, wheat or other grains are placed inside to lure the pigeons.

Another hugely popular method is to use pigeon repellents, which come in the form of gel or liquid and can be soft, hot or sticky. These repellents can be applied by anyone and everyone to regions that are favored by pigeons to roost.

Reflective devices, sound and spices like cinnamon, pepper, cayenne pepper, etc. are also used to keep out birds. Furthermore, fake toys of angry looking kittens, owls, snakes, etc. and toys that move on impact have been used to scare away pigeons. These methods might not have lasting effects and the pigeons will get used to the new addition if there is plenty of food available in the region.

People are also known to administer poison and even shoot these birds. However, it is always advisable to use humane means to get rid of these creatures without the bloodshed and without harming the ecosystem.

Thus, it can be concluded that it is better to pigeon-proof your property rather than trying several methods, successfully or unsuccessfully, to get rid of these homing birds. The best method is one that is cost-effective, non-toxic, no dangerous, easy to install and has lasting effects.
